Now that it’s officially the summer, and we’re all spending more time outdoors, you’ve probably stocked up on the sunscreen and prepped yourself for all of the beautiful weather. Gone are the dark and gloomy days of the faux-spring that we just experienced. I’m ready to welcome all of the sun’s rays and vitamin D with open arms. What if I told you that you’re actually not getting as much vitamin D as you thought you were? Yeah, I was surprised to find that out too.
Throughout the recent years, my health has quickly skyrocketed to the top of my list of priorities and last year I took my first step into taking better care of myself by incorporating sunscreen into my daily routine. Not only am I adamant about applying it all over my face every single morning (regardless if I set foot outside of my condo or not), but I’ve also begun to religiously apply sunscreen onto my body if I’m planning to spend extended periods of time outdoors. I also make a point of wearing a hat and sunglasses whenever I can to further protect myself from the sun’s harmful UV rays, because getting skin cancer is not in my life plans and it’s something that is definitely preventable if you’re taking the appropriate precautions.
Because of all of these preventative measures, I allow myself to stay outside for longer periods of time, to not only build up that nice summer tan, but to also soak up all of the vitamin D that I can get while the sun is out for the limited period of time that we get it in Canada. Except, if you are covering up and wearing sunscreen to protect yourself from cancer causing UV rays, you are also stopping your bodies ability to produce vitamin D from the sun. When you add in the factors that there aren’t sufficient food sources where this nutrient is readily available for us to consume, and that most Canadians assume that they no longer need to supplement with vitamins because the sun’s rays are doing job, our bodies are actually severely lacking in vitamin D. This is definitely one of those cases where we believe that we’re doing the best for our bodies when we actually aren’t, and the best thing to do is to actually take sun safety measures and continue taking a daily vitamin D supplement.
Due to these factors, 1/3 of Canadians aren’t receiving the optimal level of vitamin D their bodies require in the winter while even in summer 1/4 are still lacking. Vitamin D is an important component to your health because of its ability of aiding the body in absorbing calcium, which in turn promotes the development of your bones and teeth. Without it, you’ve got a problem.
And although most of us believe that the vitamin D2 that we consume through fortified milk may be sufficient, this derivative just isn’t as easily absorbed as vitamin D3—which our body naturally produces when exposed to the sun.
A few months ago, I began sharing on Instagram stories some of the supplements that I’ve been taking every morning. Over the course of the next year, my hope is to slowly incorporate more of my health practices into my content to further share the knowledge in hopes of helping you to also create a better and healthier life for yourself. Today’s topic revolves around vitamin D, and how you can ensure that you’re consuming the appropriate amount for your body to stay healthy.
When sifting through the different options available for taking vitamin D, Jamieson Vitamins has 7 different methods available: tablets, gummies, spray, droplets, chewables, fast-dissolve, and softgels. I looove my sweets, and that’s not an exaggeration. So it goes without question that when gummies are an option, I take them. Not only are the Jamieson Vitamin D Gummies delicious, but they’re infused with all-natural orange, strawberry, and lemon flavours so you’re never concerned about any artificial flavours. It’s also important to note that they also don’t contain any salt, gluten, lactose, aspartame or artificial colours either. Your body is getting exactly what it needs, and only what it needs, no fancy or additional gimmicks.
And while it’s easy for me to keep up with my regular health regimen while at home, in no way do I slack while traveling. You guys already know that I love exploring the world, and my health is definitely not something that I’m willing to compromise while I’m out there. Getting sick while on a trip is probably also one of the worst things that can happen to you. Nothing ruins an amazing trip faster than beings struck down with a cold or an injury. To ensure that I’m always getting my dosage of vitamins, I swap out the gummies for the Jamieson Vitamins D3 Tablets since they take up significantly less space in my luggage. I simply pour out the appropriate quantity that I would need for my trip into my pill sorter and I’m ready to go! Seriously though, whether I’m at home or away, I always take my health very seriously—as we all should!
So go on, get outside, soak up all of those sun rays while you can because summer isn’t going to be around for long. Just make sure to apply on that sunscreen to avoid any potential skin cancer scares, and make sure to keep up your regular daily intake of vitamin D3 to ensure that you’re enjoying the weather in tip top shape this summer!
