I’ve found that my feet are my most used and abused part of my body. Regardless of how dry my hands get, they never feel as sore as my feet do after a long day of walking. Okay, except for the couple of times that my hands fetl like they were going to snap off after studying for exams for weeks on end, I take a lot better care of the digits than I do of the toes.
That being said, I love the look of heels, but it’s important to consider that in the long run, they aren’t the most practical option when it comes to your health. I do so much walking around on a daily basis that constantly wearing heeled booties just isn’t worth the pain. Luckily, sneakers seem to be the shoe de jour, and I’ve been steadily growing my collection. Remember: comfort always comes first!
The most recent addition to my sneaker fam are these Geox Nebula shoes in black leather. Oddly enough I have a bajillion (is that even a word?) black booties, but not a single pair of black sneakers. With a wide range of colours, this pair wasn’t my initial pick. I had originally tried on the same pair in Light Taupe, thinking that it would be the one that I’d be walking out with – until I spotted the Black Leather ones. As you probably know by now, I’m a sucker for anything black, and anything leather.
Unlike other “fashion sneakers”, NEBULAs have a patented Geox Net Breathing System technology that makes each step feel like you’re walking on soft plush clouds as opposed to pounding your feet against the pavement. Almost like clouds as some would say.
I was curious how this feeling was achieved and peered into the shoe to take a look at the sole design. When I noticed that the sole was constructed out of leather, I was a little hesitant. In the past, leather soles have molded well to my feet, creating a “personalized” foot bed, but never facilitated air circulation, causing the shoes to get stinky real quick. Smelly shoes are potent mixture of stench and heat – not a pleasant combination. So if giving up the option of having perfectly fitted soles to facilitate my high arches for the sake of having non-odourous feet is the only one, I’ll take it.
So you can imagine my surprise to see little circular puncture holes made into the sole that allowed for breathability. Yes! Goodbye stinky feet! The dream of perfectly molded soles without rivalling the stench of a skunk is definitely achievable. The next thought that came to my head was whether or not the sneakers would stand up to wet roads. Holes that let your feet breathe and all are nice, but shoes that soak up water and result in you walking around in sock puddles are quite the opposite.
Luckily for me (but in hindsight it wasn’t the brightest idea), the Nebulas passed the water resistency test when I purposefully walked through a pudle of melting snow while holding my breathe. Had they not been designed to hold up, I would have had to walk back home for 30 minutes with a squish in each step. Rain clouds no, fluffy clouds of cushion yes!
