Top 10 Spring Fashion Trends

With Spring right around the corner (we are mere weeks away from it!) I am revamping my closet to welcome in the warmer season and wanted to share with you my top 10 favourite trends that I’m loving for this season! After spending the past few cold months stuck indoors, I can’t wait to take out all of my cute outfits for a spin around the block for coffee dates with Peter, to dates at the dog park. Now that we don’t need to wear bulky jackets and parkas anymore that’ll only cover up our outfits, I have more reason than ever to throw on something cute.

There are a lot of new trends floating around for Spring (definitely more than 10), but I rounded up my top 10 favourite ones that I think are not only stylish, but have some longevity to them as well. With all of the lockdowns that we’ve experienced this past year, the last thing that you’ll want to is pick up some new cute pieces, and only get the chance to wear them once or twice before we’re not allowed to anymore. So I’ve rounded up the best ones that are not only great for Spring/Summer 2021, but ones that I’ve seen been popular before, showing just how cyclical they’ll be in the future. Some of these are already staples in my wardrobe that it didn’t take much effort for me to ‘re-shop‘ my own closet to find them!

The Top 10 Must Have Spring Fashion Trends

Oversized Blazers

Boxer blazers were already on trend last year, but this Spring we’re taking them extra oversized. Think thrifted from the back of your grandfather’s closet and it’s 4x too big for you oversized. The bigger the better in this sense! This is a fun trend to jump onto because you really don’t need to go out and shop for new blazers just to achieve the look. Trust me, do a little bit of digging in your dad’s or grandfather’s closet and you’re bound to find at least one that’ll fit you perfectly. And if not, go thrifting! Some of my favourite blazers have actually been ones that I’ve thrifted. You’re not only giving second life to clothes that no longer have an owner but you might also save yourself some cash too!

Flared Pants

Another trend that you could probably avoid spending money on are the flared pants. This trend is 100% cyclical as it was popular in the 60’s and the 90’s. When I was in middle school, we called this style of pants ‘bell bottoms‘. I remember begging my mom to buy me a pair, only for her to always turn me down—and now it’s back. The only pair of flared pants that I have are a pair of yoga pants from lululemon so those are going to be the ones that I’ll be styling for this Spring. But I digress. If you want to save yourself the hassle of buying a brand new pair, dig into your closet (hopefully you didn’t throw out the ones that you wore over a decade ago), or visit a family members’ wardrobe for theirs! I’ve linked a really cute pair from H&M if you’re not able to locate an existing one, but I also really like that this trend isn’t too expensive to achieve either. Most flared pants are relatively well priced so your credit card won’t be too angry at you for this purchase.

Boot Cut Jeans

Boot cut or straight jeans are one slight deviation away from mom jeans, so you bet I was instantly a fan of these. I’ve heard rumblings of low-rise boot cut jeans making a come back, so I’ll be holding onto my high-waisted pairs with a death grip but I am head-over-heels in love with this trend. Not only are boot cut jeans supremely comfortable, but they’re flattering as well. The silhouette does a phenomenal job at elongating your legs and come in so many fun different styles. My favourite has got to be the jeans with the side slides, making it extremely easy to drape over top of my shoes.

Knit Bralettes

These began popping up every where early last Spring, but they’re only finally picking up peak momentum this year. I’m glad that I picked up a few pairs for myself throughout last year and love that they’re still on trend this Spring/Summer. Not only knit bralettes ridiculously comfortable, they offer up so much more coverage than your traditional bra and appear socially acceptable to wear out and about throughout the summer. At least that’s how I feel in Toronto. Everyone here is always so exploratory with their fashion that nothing really ever seems out of place. My favourite way to style these is to pair them together with something high-waisted on the bottom together with a blazer or cardigan over top.

Wide Leg Trousers

I am a sucker for tailoring, so wide leg trousers have my heart. Similar to boot cut jeans, these pants are ridiculously comfortable, so they’re well worth the investment. I think that after spending the past year in leggings and joggers, the desire to dress up but still maintain a certain level of comfort is on everyone’s minds. Not only are trousers sleek and beautiful, but they’re comfortable to wear all day long as well. You’ll be able to get a lot of wear out of them this Spring, and take them beyond 2021 as well. Once we’re back working in offices, you’ll have a healthy collection to choose from, but can do double duty from everyday fashion to office fashion!

Animal Print

I’m a little partial to this trend, but I actually do really like it. Animal prints have always been considered neutrals, so it won’t be that far out of anyone’s comfort zones to integrate a bit of animal print into their life. Two years ago cheetah print was the biggest thing, and now it’s zebra and cow print. I don’t think I’m ready for cow print anything yet so I’ll be sticking closely to the zebra aesthetic.

Sexy Cutouts

A little cutout here, a little cutout there, we’re finding new ways to show off skin that don’t necessarily always involve cleavage! I’m loving the style of expertly placed cutouts in places you wouldn’t regularly expect (one of my favourite shirts right now has them in the armpits), and it’s really shaking things up in the category of showing off skin. Backless shirts were huge last summer, and from what I’m currently seeing, they’ll be just as popular this Spring/Summer around!

Spring Knitwear

Another trend that started early last year but that’s only picking up momentum this year are Spring knits. This trend is more or less bringing your traditional Spring silhouettes and styles but in knit form. Think knit tank tops, knit bralettes, knit shorts. Knit everything is here to stay! I love the cozy vibe of knitwear, and some of my favourite ones for Spring are complete knit sets that can either be worn all together, or completely apart.

Sage Green

Honestly, this might be my favourite Spring 2021 trend yet. All through the winter I was in love with a rich forest green, so of course come Spring, it would only make sense that I adjust my colour preferences to a muted pastel colour range. Oh yeah, I was also obsessed with olive green all of last summer, maybe green is my new favourite colour and I just never realized it until now?! Either way, sage green is popping up everywhere and I’m obsessed. Not only is it a beautiful pastel that’s perfect for Spring, but the colour itself has such a calming effect that I think we could all do with after this last year. Honestly this colour instantly makes me feel as calm as I get when I’m getting treatments at a spa, so I could happily thrive on wearing this colour the entire season.

Brown Tones

This was an easy trend for me to take on seeing as I already own so much brown in my wardrobe, which makes me love it even more. I wasn’t lying when I said that this Spring’s trends are great because you won’t need to spend too much money to recreate them and this is no exception. Brown for some reason rose in popularity over the Fall/Winter seasons and it’s still trending positively into Spring.

For a deeper dive into this upcoming season’s trends, I’ve put together a little video on my YouTube channel discussing the finer parts of it, so make sure to give it a watch for a more in depth analysis!
