We’re all told that black is the most slimming color, but I believe that there’s no better time to wear its opposite than in the summer. I know, I know – black and white aren’t colors, they are shades, but that’s all just semantics.
There’s just something about a good white outfit for the summer that’s so crisp and refreshing, that you don’t even need to try hard to look good. Afterall, the whole art of dressing well is the effortlessness – am I right? So unless you’re covered in a bunch of different stains, I can almost guarantee that you’ll look good in white every single time you wear it out this summer.
I actually did an Instagram takeover for my girl’s, Sasha’s, Instagram account for her e-commerce site a couple weeks back. You can check it out here, here and here! And in case you missed it or even wanted to stalk me a little bit more (admit it, you want to know what I do every waking minute of my day – I would!), here’s a full diary post over on Sashion’s blog!
Being the amazing curater that she is, I basically wanted every single piece that she had available. Fortunately for me, all the ones that I did want were available and I grabbed a couple to bring home with me to style. Of the ones that I chose, I had already picked a blue, waist-cinching kimono, so I wanted something drastically different (ie. an opposing shade and silhouette). Because of the kimono’s cinched waist, the A-line cut of this high-collared swingy dress made for the perfect counterpart.
My goal was to not only have a diferent take on the Sashion’s style, but to also select a piece that would be effortlessly easy to style and play around with. I liked the styling done for this piece on her site, and would have loved to replicate the dainty lace layering underneath – but alas, no such garments exist in my closet. So instead of going for the dainty and feminie style, I chose something a little bit more normcore and androgenous.
The dress itself was already so overwhelming and the centre of attention with its giant swathes of fabric that I knew the rest of whatever I put together had to be simple. Competing accessories to the main garment is not a good look. The goal was to make the outfit pleasing to look at, like a breath of fresh air on a hot summer’s day. Weird analogy, I know, but it was the first thing that popped into my mind.
I wanted to keep everything casual, so heels were completely out of the question. Chucks would have been overly city casual, so I kept it to more of a minimalistic style with a pair of my current favorite slides from Adidas. I scored these (also in a children’s size – surprise, surprise!) on an amazing deal at a little outlet mall out on the outskirts of Ottawa on my way back to Toronto and just knew that the stripes would go along perfectly with how straight the silhouette of the dress was. Talk about being straight – but all within a completely different context.
Like I said, underwhelming was the key, so I only accessorized with a simple felt hat and a couple silver rings. I wasn’t planning on being overly blingy with this look, so I made sure that all of the hardware was silver so that it would blend together with the stark white of the dress.
And even if I wasn’t able to give anyone that breathe of fresh air that they needed, I felt invigorated just being able to triapse around down in this ridiculously swingy, white, summer dres.
