About two weeks ago, I packed up my bags and left for Vegas. I’ll just put it out there that it was for a work trip, not pleasure, so I didn’t get the chance to explore the strip as much as I would like. But though having fun wasn’t exactly making the top of my list of priorities, we made sure to find some time to ourselves to enjoy the strip and to do some guilt-free Sin City shopping.
Although I love traveling, one of the things that I hate the most is packing. Winter traveling is a hassle since you fill your luggage with thick puffy sweaters as well as fluffy socks. Summer traveling isn’t any better because half of the time you’re flying from one climate to another so you have to pack appropriately so that you don’t overheat or freeze.
A couple years ago I went through this cycle of purchasing various cheap sunglasses only to amass a giant collection and not actually like any of them. I successfully sold them all off, only to realize that I only had 2 working pairs left. Two pairs cuts it when you’re using them just fo UV protection. But two pairs isn’t exactly going to cut it when it comes to styling outfits. Although you know I love a functional practicality, I do like my options. So a couple days before my trip, I went out to case some new options.
Thinking back on all of the sunglasses that I’ve ever owned, I only remember black and tortoise shell ones – how boring! I felt that it was time to try something a little bit more bold and to play with some color. I’ve been eyeing Illesteva Leonard II sunnies for quite awhile but wasn’t exactly ready to drop almost $300 on a pair of shades that I’d only wear whenever it was sunny outside (oh how I wish!). So instead, to make sure that I was truly, madly, deeply in love with the reflective shades in a retro shape, I decided to give these $6 ones from Forever 21 a try. I promised myself that if I can go through at least a month wearing these and truly like how they look, I would go back to contemplating the Illesteva ones.
For my lack of a nose bridge, these plastic frames fit surprisingly well. My asian genes don’t exactly provide the best grip for sunglasses that don’t have nose pads, so whenever I land on a pair that doesn’t slide up and down my nose, I am A-game for it. The only other test that would immediately sell the sunglasses to me, would be if the bottom of the frames doesn’t hit my cheeks before they land on my nose. Tadah! These ones passed the test. And when a solid pair of sunglasses passes the “Sunglasses Test” (oh god, that sounds a lot cornier when I have to say it out loud than instead of in my head), I take them regardless of what the situation is.
But as I said before, not all sunglasses match with every single outfit. My older two pairs are aviators, making them perfect for a casual laidback look. Since these ones have a thicker plastic frame, and a rainbow reflection, they make for the perfect edgy but clean outfit. Pairing them with my Alexander Wang X H&M T and faux leather jacket was the perfect combination. Though the T-shirt ran a little bit short, so I had to wrap a plaid shirt around my waist to prevent the wind from exposing my behind.
Since it’s not winter anymore, I broke out my Chucks for the first time this year. Boy did it feel good to be released from the shackles of winter boots (regardless of how warm they are, nothing compares to a good pair of broken in Chucks) and to be sockless for the first time ever in about 5 months. It’s like going commando, only in your shoes – and it doesn’t feel as awkward.
Would you be surprised if I said that this is my ultimate airport uniform? And by uniform I mean that I like to go all out black whenever I can (I know, I know, I’m not a celebrity, but a girl can pretend right?), and be as comfortable as I can. Who really wants to sit in an airplane uncomfortably for 5 hours without being able to properly move your arms and legs? Girl needs to be able to curl up into a ball to sit comfortably on a plane. I’m not the type of person that can easily recline and fall asleep for a few hours.
But besides being comfortable, this outfit is also practical. The plaid shirt is perfect for layering if I get chilly on the top, and works great as a small blanket if I get chilly on the plain. Plus the jacket is thick enough to keep away the wind but can be easily shed once it gets too warm. Perfect? I think so!
