I #LoveSleep – Endy Mattress Review

I #LoveSleep

I #LoveSleep. Plain and simple. Ask any of my friends or colleagues and they’ll confirm that I’m always late to things because I’ve slept in. If sleeping as a job existed, I would quite as well be a professional at it. That being said, even though I love to sleep, I still value the quality of my rest. I’ve always found it extremely hard to fall asleep mid-flight (as we speak, I’m drafting out this post while miles high it the air purely to kill time because I can’t fall asleep) due to how uncomfortable the seats are, and the complete lack of leg room. But given then space, I could make myself a bed and fall asleep absolutely anywhere else. Some places to highlight include on top of a fridge in the back of a restaurant, in the booth of a club, in the storage closet of a recreation facility, and too many more to name. The moral of this story is, I #LoveSleep.

And while I can make any small/cramped space into a comfortable bed—except for airplanes—my favourite place has always been my own bed at home. With the uptick of travel projects that I’ve taken on recently, regardless of how much fun a trip is, I always look forward to returning home and sleeping in my own bed. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of sliding underneath your own duvet, sinking into your pillows and curling up on your mattress. Seriously, there’s no place like home.

Growing up I’ve only ever had a twin-sized bed. For about 22 some years, I never had the luxury of rolling around in a king throughout the night—though I really should invest in one because I move so much in my sleep. So when I first moved to Toronto and wasn’t sure of where I would be living, I slightly upgraded to a double. All said and done, at the time it was an upgrade and absolutely felt like I was living a completely different world, just having an extra half of a bed to myself. Then P moved to Toronto, shacked up with me and all of that space was gone.

We shared that double for about almost 3 years before deciding that it would be time to adult and once again upgrade to a larger size. Anyone who has gone through the process of upgrading their bed will understand the costs involved. Along with a new mattress, you’ll also have to purchase a new bed frame, a completely new set of sheets, and in some cases, even a new blanket. It’s quite the costly affair!

Finding a new bedframe was easy. All that went into it (for me at least) were factors such as aesthetics, quality, and price point. I’ve known for quite awhile which bedframe I would want to upgrade too, it was the mattress part that remained a challenge. Both P and I have very different sleep habits, patterns, and preference. P loves to go to bed early, doesn’t move too much, and loves a firm mattress. While myself, I love to sleep late at night, I flail around, but I also love a firmer mattress. So finding a mattress that would suit all of our requirements proved to be an interesting challenge.

A few of my friends had taken on the 100-night trial and I felt that it would be a good opportunity to really test out an Endy mattress without committing to it if it didn’t work out. A word of advice, if you’ve never switched up your mattress, know that it takes awhile to adjust to a new one. But before we dive into the sleep sitch, let’s talk about the delivery experience.

Since P and I both live together downtown, having a car isn’t exactly a priority. Any time we purchase furniture, we always stress about renting a van/truck to transport the pieces back home, which is super annoying because we then have to go through the process of registering for parking, picking up, and returning the car, and also booking out the loading dock to drop off the furniture. Too much stress for too short of a period of time. Luckily Endy has a delivery service that drops the mattress right off at your door, and it comes conveniently rolled up in a little box making it super easy to store if you don’t yet have the right bed frame for it—which is what happened to us. Our mattress arrived a few days earlier than our frame so we slid it into our hallway closet to be out of site until the frame arrived. Convenience? Check!

When our frame did arrive, the whole set up process was also extremely efficient. The mattress quickly unrolled over the bed slats and decompressed within minutes. Head’s up that there’s an interesting plastic smell that lingers for a few days, but it totally clears up by the end of a week and your mattress won’t smell anymore. My suspicions are that the smell comes from the plastic wrapping so I absolutely understand why it smells like it does.

Our first night of sleep was interesting to say the least. Our queen sized mattress was definitely a lot more spacious but at the same time softer as well. Coming from a firm to a soft mattress was definitely a change that took awhile to get used to. P went through a few weeks of neck and back aches as his body adjusted to the change in firmness, but my body adjusted quite easily and soon I was having the best sleeps ever. Given the time, P’s neck and back aches went away as his body adjusted and now he sleeps as soundly as ever! I swear as time passed, the mattress got firmer! What I also learned is that Endy mattresses are designed to really learn your body so that over time it will adapt and provide just the right amount of support to portions of your body that needs it. After my 100-night trial, I actually found it harder than ever to wake up and get out of bed in the morning. Not that it’s a bad thing, but thank god I work from home and have the luxury of being able to reply back to emails from bed.

Speaking of working from home, I often go to sleep quite a few hours after P and always stress about waking him up when I crawl into bed. Though our previous mattress was nice and firm, it came with a lot of springs and I found that it would frequently bounce both sides of the bed whenever it was time for me to sleep—thus waking P up and disrupting his rest. Since the Endy mattress conforms to your body, it really minimizes the movement from one side of the bed to the other whenever the other person moves. Now P can’t get mad at me for crawling into bed late anymore since he never wakes up when I do!

So our verdict? After sleeping on the Endy mattress for almost 4 months, I think it’s safe to say that it’s going to be a permanent fixture in our place. I’ve also learned that sometimes change is okay! Here’s to a countdown towards upgrading to a king!
