I’m the type of girlfriend that you’d hate. I was born and raised in the land of Disney and celebrate Valentine’s Day like it’s a religion. I’m obsessed with the idea of soul mates and believe that though you should celebrate every day like it’s Valentine’s Day, February 14th should be the one special day that you go over the top with your affections.
In hindsight, I just like to create lasting memories that are fun to reminisce on in the future. So a romantic dinner by candle-light while sitting over top of a bridge isn’t exactly what I’d call a fun Valentine’s Day.
P and I have both been on a little bit of a health kick recently and I’ve been having thoughts of giving kickboxing a try. So Bench. Canada set up a private kick-boxing lesson at Big Hit Studios and I teamed up with Mel to go on a double date with our boyfriends.
Martin, our personal trainer, started off our lesson by partnering us off against each other in a series of stretches and warm ups. I’m pretty sure he could see how competitive this made everyone and he definitely used it to his advantage to get us all to work harder.
Having never once tried kick boxing prior to this lesson, I was a little anxious as to how I’d perform. Would my punches look week? Would I get out of breathe from all the sequences? Would I just suck in general? Thankfully, Martin was amazingly patient and carefully walked us through the proper stances and body positioning to ensure that while we executed the moves smoothly, we maintained form.
After we completed our warm ups, Martin walked us through a series of sequences. We learned how to throw a hook, how to do a “Popeye” uppercut, as well as how to kick without hurting your ankle. I’m pretty prepared for a random stranger to jump me now – not that I’d want to test myself in that situation.
Once Martin got a sniff of our competitive nature, we picked up that partnering us up and pitting us against each other would make us work harder. Mel and I each teamed up against our respective boyfriends for some conditioning workouts and got our butts kicked.
Between pyramid sequences and body weight exercises, I definitely got an intense workout within the span of 45 minutes. I don’t think I’ve ever sweat more than the time I tried out hot yoga. I could literally feel the fat sweating out of my pores. Good thing I wore black – sending off my fat to its funeral at Big Hit Studios!
You’re probably wondering why Mel and I showed up with the exact same pair of leggings, I swear it was purely coincidental. Given the fact that we have fairly similar taste in clothes and that I have a severe obsession with marble, it didn’t come as a surprise to me when she showed up in the same pair of leggings.
We also both began with a top but quickly shed the unnecessarily layers once we started sweating profusely. If you think that kick boxing is all fun and games, my dear you are devestatingly wrong. I can see why the sport is a popular workout routine of the Victoria’s Secre angels. Not only do you get a cardio-vascular workout, but you also stretch and flex a lot of your muscles throughout the execution of the moves.
With the constant muscle elongation, it’s easy to see how those models develop such lithe figures. I quite literally woke up the morning after feeling sore in places that I’d never felt sore before when I worked out with weights. It’s amazing how different exercises can workout different muscles!
Was our Valentine’s Day date romantic? No. Was it memorable? Yes. I’d definitely prefer memorable to romantic when thinking back on celebrations past. If every single February 14th revolved around cutesy memories I’d most likely wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.
