It’s always a good sign when your Rimowa matches the interior of the plane! Just kidding 🙂 But I wanted to start a series where I discuss my various experiences with airlines since Peter and I have done so much traveling within the past year, that we have had the lovely opportunity to fly with so many different airlines. On our most recent trip to Spain, we had the pleasure of working with WOWair to experience what they have to offer and they did not disappoint. Base out of KeflavÃk International Airport, WOWair is a low-budget airline that offers travelers the opportunity to explore Iceland during obligatory stopovers in ReykjavÃk. That is to say that each and every flight booked with WOWair has a stopover in Iceland, regardless of how long or short it is.
Food & Beverage In-Flight
I wanted to first cover what the meaning of low-budget entails. Luggage is an additional add-on to your flight ticket, as well as food/bev service, and there is no in-flight entertainment system. While most flights you have been on typically offer snacks in the form of chips/biscuits/pretzels, and drinks (coffee, water, juice), you won’t find those amenities on WOWair. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since the small snack portions aren’t designed to supplement a full mean anyways. Most of us usually end up purchasing a full meal at the terminal or on-board the flight. Seriously, it’s not a big deal. We usually pack our own snacks in the form of chips, granola bars, and cookies, and then stock up on the “real food” (think a legitimate meal) at the terminal prior to boarding so that we never have to worry about being hungry.
That doesn’t mean that food isn’t available to purchase once you’re in-flight though! They do come around with menus where you can order food such as pasta to pizza. Those that enjoy in-flight meals will definitely be taking care of!
#WOWStopover
Another factor to note is the #WOWStopover. Every single WOWair flight makes a pit stop in Rejkavik, Iceland. For anyone who has ever wanted to visit Iceland, this is the perfect opportunity to leave the airport and explore the beauty country. If we had a bit more time, I would have definitely made our layover last longer than 20 hours so that we would have had the opportunity to actually experience Iceland for all that it has to offer.
Unfortunately our layover just so happened to be overnight. We landed at around 8PM from Alicante, and our flight out to Toronto wasn’t scheduled till the next day at 3PM—which meant that almost everything to day was already closed, or about to close. With the minimal daylight that we would have had, it just didn’t make sense to leave the airport for a few hours.
We’ve decided that the next we have the opportunity to fly with WOWair, we’ll book our stop over to last for 2-3 days so as to make some time for hiking and relaxing at the Blue Lagoon. If you’ve already been to Iceland, I would love to hear your recommendations of things that we absolutely must do/visit!
Quality of Staff
When I posted the first photo of this post onto Instagram, I got so many questions and DM’s from my followers asking whether or not the people behind me had to wait a long time before I got the perfect photo. Oddly enough, I wasn’t the first person to board the plane, nor would I ever force others to wait behind me while I take a photo. We actually did quite the opposite and waited for the passengers to de-plane before taking this shot.
The in-flight staff (and even the pilot) were ever so kind enough to allow us to take a couple of minutes to shoot this photo before they had to clear out the plane for the next flight. Please do keep in mind that we had previously asked them for permission while still mid-air, so setting up for this picture wasn’t a last minute request. Throughout the entire flight, and as we de-planed, we received impeccable service (much better than I had expected from a discount airline), and I was seriously impressed with their staff!
We both honestly had such a pleasant time flying with WOWair that we can’t wait to go on another adventure. What’s next on my list? There are so many places that I’d love to visit! Amsterdam being one of my top bucket list items, but San Francisco and Copenhagen rank pretty high up as well! After seeing all of the beautiful photos of the tulip fields in Lisse, I’m really hoping to make it out to Amsterdam next May!
