Create Your Own Adventure

If you were a 90’s child, then those “choose our own adventure” novels will be a fond memory of your past. I always cheated and folded down the pages that lead to different paths just to “test the waters” because I never wanted to fail. Clearly I’m not good at accepting failure.

I’ve always been fond of controlling your destiny (as cheesy as it sounds) and am quite the adrenaline junky. I love trying new things and exploring new places – even if it risks the chance of me getting a little bit damaged (ie. bruises, cuts, and the chance of potentially falling over a cliff – okay not really, but you get my drift).

My bucket list includes paragliding, cliff-diving, and sky-diving just to name a few. Hopefully you get the idea of how far I like to get that little adrenaline rush.

Unfortunately, most of those are currently not feasible, so pushing my limits and fear of heights on the Scarborough Bluffs were the next best option.

A couple of months ago, I went surfing and paddle-boarding with Bench. and decided that it was time to go on a little bit of an adventure of my own. I’d seen beautiful photos of the Scarborough Bluffs and immediately knew that it would be another item to check off of my bucket list.

You probably can’t tell, but the little platform that I’m kneeling on is no wider than about 2 feet across and the sheer drop on either side is easily 100-200 meters down a vertical drop to water (on 1 side) and a beach (on the other).

And though I may not look like it, I guarantee you that I was scared out of my wits – to the point where I refused to stand on the little outlook. Kneeling was as far as I could go. Kind of pathetic, but hey, that was as far as I could push my own boundaries. And I promise you that I was more than happy with only being able to go that far.

Dressing for this adventure was kind of strange, as the warm sun made it hot enough to rock out my sports bra and a fun breathable skirt, but the wind  at the top of the bluffs definitely called for some sort of cover-up.

I’ve been eyeing these fun sort of puffer-bomber jackets lately, except all of the ones that I’ve seen have been an army green. Being the monochromatic obssessed type of person that I am, it was kind of a dream come true seeing the Daysplash Jacket available in off-white.

I brought a spare change of clothes in my Placid B Holdall just in case that a skirt wouldn’t cut the short hike (it was definitely okay to wear a skirt on this one), and made sure to wear the sturdiest shoes that I owned.

One word of caution, if you’re going to be walking around the bluffs, I highly recommend that you do not wear your nicest runners. Unless you stay behind the wire and signs that clearly state that it’s unsafe to go past and lookout over the cliffs – which we obviously ignored, your shoes are going to be covered in dust.

But hey, you do what you got to do to get th picture right? Anyone else that I’d tell this to would probably be shaking their head thinking that I’m a complete nutcase at the moment.

The traction on these Major Carly Boots from Sorel definitely saved my life when I almost slipped off of the edge of the cliff. It’s safe to say that if I was wearing any one of my other boots (the fashionable ones), you probably wouldn’t be able to read this post.

But as scared as I was, it’s definitely a place that I’d go back to over and over again. It’s nothing like what you’d see in the rest of Toronto, kind of like a sanctuary within the city. It’s so overlooked that it’s not as busy as you’d expect, yet the view is beautiful enough to warrant a slew of tourists everyday.

If the Scarborough Bluffs are in your plans and your goal is to geta nice view from the cliffs, definitely make sure to drive up to the top in the residential neighborhood (ignore the sign that says “no access to the bluffs”– it’s all just a lie) and park your car in the park there before going for a stroll. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
