It’s not often that I get to enjoy cherry blossoms. The climate here in Toronto only permits them to bloom for at most two weeks before they fall to the ground, never to be seen again until another year goes by. I was thoroughly surprised to see them everywhere while in LA, since I had come to expect them to only exist in movies. False, cherry blossoms are real and they exist in LA.
But cherry blossoms weren’t the only things that I got to experience – loose, draped clothing quickly became a must with the humid air and hot sun beating down on us. Coming from cold winter temperatures where blousey materials create miniature wind tunnels underneath your clothes, it was a refreshing change to be able to wear something loose again. Maxi dresses and trousers? Yes, yes and so much yes. I was almost jumping for joy when I felt the warm breeze in between my pant legs and my actual legs. Can we say summer-high?
I can’t wait till this cold weather is over so that I can start wearing all of my sumer clothes again and to feel that warmth on my skin.
It’s funny because each season we’re such hypocrites. In the winter, I can’t help but dream for warmth and wish away the snow. But come summer, I feel like I’m being burnt by the sun, I hate the feeling of my dark hair heating up underneath the solar rays and I’d pray for some snow to fall from the sky. It’s that age old philosophy that “you always want what you can’t have“. Which is in fact entirely true. When you have something, you take it for granted until it’s taken away from you. Only then do you understand how much you took it for granted, and what you’d do to get it back. So instead of begrudgingly wishing away winter, I’m going to try to accept it for what it is and be glad that I was able to escape for a short while to enjoy the heat before I hate it too.
