Caffeine Runs

Caffeine RunsI’m the type of person who’s day doesn’t start until caffeine has first made it into my belly. And it’s not because I need that extra boost of energy, it’s more because I have a caffeine addiction. There, I’ve admitted it. I only drink coffee because I’m addicted to it.

Technically, I could start my day without requisite my cup of joe, but because I’ve had it every morning for as long as I can remember, it doesn’t feel right to get started on work before I’ve injected my GI tract with caffeine. Psychologically, I think it’s the taste more than anything that I’ve gotten used to expecting. But the funny thing is that I don’t drink it on the weekends. The activity is solely reserved for weekdays, which is why I enjoy my weekends so much. To me coffee signifies work, and when there’s no coffee, my body relaxes.

But because I’ve grown to love coffee for its taste as opposed to its effects, I’ve also grown fond of trying out local cafes for their fresh brewed coffee and baked goods. One of my favorite joints to frequent is Dineen. If you’ve never been, then you’ll have to go just to check out their floors. The tiling is an interior decorator’s dream. But although I love Dineen to bits, I’ve been itching to get my hands on some caffeine from other nearby cafes that I’ve heard a lot about.

A couple weeks back, a colleague and I planned for an early morning coffee run to stop into a relatively close by cafe to test out what they had to offer. We woke up earlier than usual since it was a little bit out of the way to work, and we trekked through the freezing dawn just to get that prized beverage from Rooster Coffee House.

Caffeine RunsIn a rush to leave that morning, I’d actually forgotten to pack myself both a breakfast and lunch for the day. I’m not one to indulge in early morning baked sweets so I hesitatingly purchased a croissant along with my vanilla cappucino to satiate my hunger pains. The croissant exceeded my expectations. It was fluffy and still warm on the inside, while remaining delicately flaky and crispy on the out. And it didn’t leave a heavy aftertaste either. There was a smooth and light butteriness to it that didn’t coat my tongue in fat, but was just enough to make each bite melt upon contact. You could say that I indulged that morning.

And the coffee? Oh it was delicious, full-bodied and dark, the cappucino was smaller than the ones that I’m used to at Dineen, but the flavor was enough. I can’t lie though, I’d heard about Rooster Coffee House’s famed latte art, which is what led me to pick said location – they did not disappoint. Both our cappucino and green tea latte had a little heart drawn into the foam, and neither disappeared as we enjoyed our drink. It was nice to finish off my drink seeing a little heart resting at the bottom of my cup. My only goal now is to accomplish latte art of my own so that I can start brewing my own cappucinos and lattes. Any takers willing to teach?
