Borrowed From The Boy

Rules are always meant to be broken, and the truth can really be seen when it comes to fashion. Who says that you can only wear the clothes that are specific to your gender? When it comes to what I put on each morning, it completely depends on how I’m feeling. There are some days where I want everything to be body-con level tight, feminine and to exude sensuality.

Then there are other days where I prefer a more laidback and relaxed vibe – the complete opposite. If it was acceptable to walk into the office in pajamas or sweats I definitely would. But hey, that isn’t exactly the case, since other societal rules dictate that you have to appear mildly decent in the workplace. Fortunately for me, because my workplace environment is so casual, I can afford to dress down a little bit in “presentable” clothes that warrant a put together look, but with higher levels of comfort. Skinny jeans and a sweater? Nope, this isn’t the early 2000’s and I’m not your mom’s secretary. Instead, I layer.

One of my absolute favorite looks to put together is that “boyfriend” je ne c’est quoi type of outfit. You know that casual Parisian chic without having to wear sky-high stilettos and a beret? Yeah, it’s a little more of the Alexander Wang “model of duty” type of silhouette. Everything is a relaxed fit, but carefully curated together in layered separates that give off an “I just threw these things on before I ran out of the house” look without seemingly appearing to be too much of a try hard. When it comes to achieving that “borrowed from the boy” vibe, I’d love to say that I take P’s clothes and style them into my own. Except that I can’t. He’s significantly larger than me, and being a relatively petite person, you can only roll up the sleeves of a dress shirt so many times before it starts to look ridiculous.

Fortunately, the whole looking good without trying hard appearance has gone quite mainstream as of late, making it easy for me to find “boyfriend” jeans that are cut to fit a slim frame. Trust me, you won’t be finding any male jeans that are slim enough to fit my hips unless I’m shopping in the juniors section (which I actually have done before).

But the office can get a little chilly, and nobody really wants a confused secretary oufit, so no fuzzy cardigans for me. In fact, I don’t think that I even own a single buttoned up cardigan. Not that I wouldn’t mind having one, but I can’t seem to fathom any single outfit that I’d want to put together with it. Oh well.

To add to the already baggy and loose outfit, I threw on this soft pink over-jacket that I found in H&M a couple months back. It’s already made an appearance quite a couple of times on this blog, yet this has to be my favorite so far. Not only does it end at just the right length to break up the blockiness between the hem of my T-shirt and jeans, but its lapels created an added level of texture to the front panels. Faux-layers anyone? I say, yes!
