Beach Bummin’

Beach Bummin'

After spending a couple hours at Elbow Beach, we hopped back onto the bus and made our way over to the most talked beach of the island – Horseshoe Bay. And when I say that I spent the day bummin’ around the beaches, that’s exactly what I did – or would beach hoppin’ be a better word for that?

Beach Bummin'

You know, when college freshman do their rounds of all the bars and clubs in one night, but instead of having leather booths and tables you’ve got miles of soft pink sand where you bask under the warm sun’s rays? That’s what my paradise is like. But hey, it wasn’t exactly the warmest that day, so frolicking through grottos was the best thing that we could do.

I’ve you’ve never been to Horseshoe Bay – go. Beyond the cute pink sand (you can’t really tell from the photos, but up close it really is pink!), there are beautiful rock formations and little grottos that are ripe for exploration. A word of caution, be careful of the sharp rocks hidden in the sand!

The waves that crash up on the edges of the grottos also create little whirlpools at the entrance (I’m not going to lie, I almost fell into one) and you can easily get sucked into them if you’re not being careful. But being sucked in isn’t the biggest issue. Perhaps worse is being thrown into some rocks with sharp corals that can easily slice you up before you even realize that you’ve been hurt. In a situation where pain would typically come first, it comes as an aftershock from you reacting to the sudden movements by the waves.

But regardless of the pain, the exploration is worth it. Who knows when you can go back for a second chance to see these beautiful formations anyways?

It’s easy to see why the Bermudan’s are so kind and carefree. It’s difficult to be stressed when such beautiful landscape is available to you every which way you walk. There’s something about the turquoise blue waters that relaxes the mind. The entire time that I was visiting the island, all I wanted to do was to string up a hammock in between some palm fronds and to just swing in the breeze while reading a book.

But with the lack of a hammock, all I could do was lie down in the side and absorb the sun – essentially bumming around on a beach. So beach bummin’ I did – until we left that is. Packing up and returning to the ship for dinner was one of the biggest struggles I’ve ever faced. Imagine waking up for work in the morning only after sleeping for 3 hours and feeling both groggy and out of place. Your first reaction would be to turn off any alarms and to immediately fall back asleep. But the way you can’t avoid work, I couldn’t avoid  getting back on board for a delicious dinner. So away we went – only because I knew that I’d be back in a couple of days to snorkel for the last time. Like I said, beach bummin’.
