A Canadian Tuxedo

Besides being a true Ottawan, on a larger scale I truly am a Canadian. I refer to my beanies as toques, and I also actively participate in our unsaid international uniform – the Canadian tuxedo. I really don’t think that this look gets enough of the love that it deserves. But before I digress, let’s dispell some misconceptions about Canada.

Yes there is snow in my photo, but snow doesn’t persist all year long. Some places in Canada don’t even get any snow in the winter (believe it or not). Where I live, I don’t know if you’d consider it lucky or not, but we get 4 distinct seasons all year long. Within a temperature range of about 80 degrees throughout the year (from -40 to +40), it’s nice to have a variety of clothes in my closet to rotate through from time to time. So yes, in the summer, it can get hot enough to the point that you wish that it was acceptable to walk around in a bikini.

We don’t live in igloos – nor do we live in farms. Our country is just as developped as the US, and we have metropolises as well. So it’s odd that the Canadian tuxedo is a complete head-to-toe denim look, as if we’re all farmers. But I’m completely in love with the neutrality of the look, and how streamlined everything is. Monochromatic in its own sense, the Canadian tuxedo is surprisingly easy to accesorize since there isn’t much else happening to detract from the attention of additional components. Nor are any of the outfit pieces contradicting, which is also fun to layer on a variety of jewelry without it appearing hardware heavy.

In the winter it’s a little bit more difficult to accessorize with jewelry since jackets tend to cover over my wrists and neckline (no one wants a bracelet impression on their wrist after taking off their jacket), so scarves and hats are the way to go. I decided to stay with a fairly neutral palette considering the fact that bright colors aren’t an often happenence in my everyday attire. That being said, every once in awhile I do enjoy some color (I just choose to save it for the warmer times).
